PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas barrier polyester film having high thrust strength and excellent gas barrier properties and having excellent characteristics not becoming high in moisture permeability or lowering in gas barrier properties under a high humidity condition like a polyamide film and generating no toxious gas at the time of incineration. SOLUTION: A coating layer containing laminar inorg. compd. particles with a particle size of 200 nm or less and a water soluble or dispersible polymer as main constituents is formed on at least one surface of a biaxially stretched film comprising polyester consisting of naphthalenedicarboxilic acid being a main acid component and 1,3-propane diol being a main diol component and having a density of 1.320 g/cm3 or more, an intrinsic viscosity of 0.4-1.5, the sum of Young's moduli in longitudinal and lateral directions of 400 kg/mm2 or more and a surface orientation coefficient (ns) of 0.1-0.3.
