PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic tensioner with a relief valve capable of increasing the degree of freedom of design of the relief valve by reducing a hydraulic pressure applied to a valve disc of the relief valve and also reducing a stress produced in spring energizing the valve disc. SOLUTION: A relief valve 26 provided on the projected end side of a plunger 12 comprises a pressure passage 20 communicating with a high-pressure oil chamber 14, a valve disc 24 inserted slidably into the pressure path 20, a spring 24 energizing the valve disc 24 in the direction of the high-pressure oil chamber 14, and a flowout port 21 communicating with the pressure passage 20 to make oil flow to the outside when the valve disc 24 is moved backward against an energizing force of the spring 25. The valve disc 24 further comprises a sliding part 24A inserted slidably into the pressure passage 20 to receive a hydraulic pressure in the high-pressure oil chamber 14 and a flange part 24B having a cross-sectional area larger than the cross-sectional area of the sliding part 24A to receive an energizing force of the spring 25 formed integrally with each other.
