PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel benzotriazole that bears a higher alkyl group and a phenyl group, shows high compatibility to paint with sublimability lowered. SOLUTION: This novel compound is represented by formula I (R1 is H, Cl,; R2 is a 6-30C alkyl; R3 is H, Cl, an alkyl or the like), typically 2-(2'- hydroxy-3'-n-dodecyl-5'-phenylphenyl)-2H-benzotriazole. The compound of formula I is prepared by allowing a compound of formula II to react with an alkene of 6-30 carbon atoms in the presence of an acidic catalyst (for example, sulfonic acid or the like). The compound of formula II is prepared by subjecting o- nitrobenzene diazonium salt or its derivative to the diazo-coupling reaction with 4-hydroxybiphenyl(p-phenylphenol) or its derivative.
