PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide STN-LCD and AM-LCD prepared using a liquid crystal composition which satisfies various characteristics required for liquid crystal optics, has a wide nematic temperature range and a low viscosity and retains a high maintenance at an elevated temperature, or a liquid crystal display element wherein the above-mentioned disadvantage has been improved compared to the conventional display elements. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display element has a structure containing a liquid crystal 5 between a pair of base plates 2 and is equipped with at least an orientation controlling layer 4, a transparent electrode 3 and a polarizing plate 1. As the above-mentioned liquid crystal, a liquid crystal composition containing a compound having a decahydronaphthalene-2,6-diyl group optionally replaced by a halogen, is used. Preferably, the electrical optics is a super-twisted nematic liquid crystal display element (STN-LCD) or active matrix liquid crystal display element (AM-LCD).
