PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new chromene compound improved in photochromic characteristics, having a rapid fading rate, hardly causing coloring when deteriorated, excellent in durability in photochromic property and useful e.g. for a memory material, a duplicate material, a optical filter material. SOLUTION: This new compound is expressed by formula I [wherein a group of formula II is an aromatic hydrocarbon group or the like; a group of formula III is a cyclopropane ring having at least (substituted)aryl and one spiro-carbon or the like; R1 and R2 are each a (substituted)aryl, a (substituted)heteroaryl or the like; R3 is OH, an alkyl or the like; (p) is 0 to 3; R4 is OH, an alkyl or the like; and (q) is 0 to 3], and is e.g. a compound of formula IV. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a compound of formula V with a compound of formula VI at a high temperature or in the presence of an acid catalyst. The reaction molar ratio of the compound of formula V to the compound of formula VI preferably is selected from a range from (1:10) to (10:1). The acid catalyst preferably is used in an amount of 0.1-10 pts.wt. based on the total weight of above reactants. The reaction temperature preferably is usually 0 to 200 deg.C.
