PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound capable of luminescing with high brightness and efficiency low-voltage drive, excellent in stability when used repeatedly, capable of uniform planar luminescence and useful for uses such as a filter dye, a color changing filter, a photosensitive material, sensitizing coloring matter, laser coloring matter and a luminescent element material. SOLUTION: This new compound is expressed by formula I [wherein R1 to R5, Rn1 and Rn2 are each H or a substituent with proviso that at least one of Rn1 and Rn2 is an aryl or an aromatic heterocycle; X is O, S or N-R (wherein R is H, an aliphatic hydrocarbon group, an aryl or a heterocycle); and Y is C-G1(G2) (wherein G1 and G2 are each H or a substituent with proviso that at least one of G1 and G2 is a substituent], and is e.g. a compound of formula II. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a thiocarbonyl compound of formula III with a compound (e.g. 1,3-indandione) having at least one active hydrogen of the formula G1-CH2-G2 in the presence of a base, and if necessary, in an added state with an activator preferably at 0 to 150 deg.C.
