PURPOSE: A refrigerator with automatic response system and method of controlling operation of refrigerator is provided to achieve an improved user convenience by allowing the user to control the cooling system through a telephone. CONSTITUTION: A refrigerator comprises a cooling system(5), an automatic response system(3) for providing a guide message to an external source through a telephone network, receiving input signals from the external source and generating a command signal; a control unit(4) for controlling the cooling system in accordance with the command signal from the automatic response system; a memory(6) for storing the set value for controlling the cooling system; and a sensor(7) for sensing a predetermined state. The control unit updates the set value stored in the memory in accordance with the command signal from the automatic response system. A method comprises the steps of providing a guide message through a telephone network, inputting a predetermined command through the telephone network, and controlling the cooling system in accordance with the input command. The step of providing the guide message further comprises the steps of sensing a predetermined state, converting the value of the sensed state into a voice signal.
