PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a highly functional liquid crystal polyamide polymer excellent in heat resistance and durability, and useful e.g. for recording materials, oriented films and nonlinear optical materials by forming a polymer having a specific chemical structure. SOLUTION: This polymer is expressed by formula I [wherein R is methyl, ethyl, or the like; (m)+(n)=5 to 10,000, (n) is 1 to 10,000 and (m) is 0 to 100(n); Q is H or a substituent not containing azo group; Z is a group of N=N-A-X, or the like; a is benzene ring or naphthalene ring both capable of having at least one substituent in addition to a group of X; and X is a 1-10C alkoxy, or the like] and is e.g. a polymer of formula II. The polymer is obtained by the polycondensation reaction of 5-(4'-n-hexyloxyphenylazo)isophthalic acid, or the like with 4,4'-diamino-3,5,3',5'-tetraethyldiphenylmethane, or the like, in an inactive organic solvent such as N-methylpyrrolidone in the presence of a condensation catalyst such as a combination of triphenylphosphite with pyridine.
