PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a hydrophilicity-modified polycarbodiimide compound capable of satisfying both sufficient curing property and preservation stability, and to obtain the hydrophilicity-modified polycarbodiimide compound and a normal temperature-curing type aqueous coating material composition containing the same. SOLUTION: The method for producing a hydrophilicity-modified polycarbodiimide compound is characterized by comprising (1) a process of reacting (a) a polycarbodiimide compound having at least 2 isocyanate groups in one molecule with (b) a polyol having hydroxyl group at its molecular terminal in a ratio of the excessive molar amount of isocyanate group of the polycarbodiimide compound (a) to the molar amount of the hydroxyl group of the polyol (b), and (2) a process of reacting (c) a hydrophilicity-modifying agent having active hydrogen atom and a hydrophilic part with the reaction product obtained in the process (1).
