摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material of cosmetics, emulsifiers and the like in an industrially advantageous way by oxidizing an aldehyde having a relatively long-chain alkyl group in the absence of a catalyst followed by pyrolyzing a peracid generated as a byproduct. SOLUTION: This compound of the formula RCOOH is obtained by oxidizing (A) an aldehyde of the formula RCHO (R is a 16-30C alkyl) in the absence of a catalyst followed by pyrolyzing (B) a peracid generated as a byproduct of the formula RCOOOH. The oxidation reaction of the component A is done in an aliphatic hydrocarbon (e.g. heptane) as a solvent, at 40-140 deg.C, preferably 60-120 deg.C, for 0.5-10 h, preferably 1-8 h. As for the oxidizing agent, air, oxygen, ozone or the like is used, however, air oxidation is preferable. Heat-treatment to pyrolyze the component B is done preferably in the presence of an inert gas, in an aliphatic hydrocarbon (e.g. heptane) as a solvent, at 13-250 deg.C, preferably 150-200 deg.C for 1-5 h, preferably 1.5-2 h.
