PURPOSE: A multi-room air conditioner and method of controlling volume of bypass refrigerant is provided to supply suitable amount of refrigerant to each of indoor heat exchangers regardless of the number or capacity of the indoor heat exchangers. CONSTITUTION: An air conditioner comprises a non-inverter type compressor(21); an outdoor heat exchanger(22) having an end connected to the end of the compressor through a first connection pipe(25a); a second connection pipe(25b) having an end connected to the other end of the outdoor heat exchanger and the other end branched into three; indoor heat exchangers(23a,23b,23c) connected to the three branched ends of the second connection pipe, respectively; a third connection pipe(25c) having an end branched into three connected to the other ends of the indoor heat exchangers, respectively, and the other end connected to the other end of the compressor; expansion valves(24a,24b,24c) arranged at the branched ends of the second connection pipe, respectively; a pair of bypass lines(30a,30b) for bypassing the refrigerant from the outdoor heat exchanger to the compressor and which have bypass pipes(31a,31b) for connecting the outdoor heat exchanger and the third connection pipe, capillary pipes(33a,33b) and bypass valves(32a,32b); and a control unit with indoor micro computers(28a,28b,28c) and an outdoor micro computer(29) for controlling the volume of the refrigerant being by-passed from the outdoor heat exchanger to the compressor by controlling the bypass valves in accordance with the total capacity of the indoor heat exchanger in operation.
