PURPOSE: A digital still camera with audio playback function and a method for controlling it are provided to enable users to listen to audio data from digital still camera and to store/remove audio data in/from the digital camera. CONSTITUTION: The digital still camera with audio playback function includes a photographing part(10,20), a memory(90), a mode selecting switch(110), an audio playback switch, a photographing switch, a controlling part(70) and an audio playing part(50). The photographing part(10,20) generates image signal by processing image of object. The memory(90) stores image signal output from the photographing part(10,20) as compressed state by frame and many audio data. The mode selecting switch(110) selects audio mode and camera mode. The controlling part(70) reads and outputs audio data stored in the memory(90) if the audio playing switch is selected in state where audio mode is selected by the mode selecting switch(110). The controlling part(70) makes image signal stored in the memory(90) by controlling the photographing part(10,20) if the photographing switch is operated in state where the camera mode is selected. The audio playing part(50) plays back and outputs audio data output from the controlling part(70) as audio signal.
