PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for controlling a short message service of a digital mobile terminal are provided to easily exchange short messages between a transmitting part and a receiving part. CONSTITUTION: A control part(20) controls whole operation of a digital mobile terminal and performance of a short message service. A letter input part(50) generates data according to the input of letter information. A memory(70) stores a program controlling the whole operation of the digital mobile terminal, initial service data, operating program according to the performance of the short message service, and data generated according to the operation. A display part(60) displays whole state of the terminal, and input figures and letters. A RF part(10) processes radio signal transmission and reception with a base station. A discriminator identifying code generating part(30) generates and adds an extra discriminator identifying code to a short message being transmitted. A separator identifying code detecting part(40) detects the discriminator identifying code from the short message being transmitted and reports the detected discriminator identifying code to the control part(20).
