A network interface device (NID) has provider wires electrically connected to customer wires at a junction. A switch is provided in the proximity of the junction to connect disconnect the provider wires from the customer wires and connected the provider wires to test contacts upon activation of the switch. The NID, whic h can support a plurality of provider and customer wires, has a corresponding numb er of test buttons that allow the customers to test their wires. The buttons can be locked to prevent tampering and inadvertent disconnection.
