PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To gradually reduce the level of bypass air as the degree of deterioration of a seal progresses, by appropriately purging a forward wheel cavity during initial start of an engine. SOLUTION: A rotary seal 66 is arranged to rotate around a shaft 12, comprises annular beads 68, 70, 72 which are extended radially outward, and stator members 74, 76, 78 having first surfaces 98 arranged so as to make contact with the beads 68, 70, 72. The stator members 74, 76, 78 incorporate slots 96 formed in their first surfaces 98, the slots 96 extending axially across the beads 68, 70, 72 so that purging air can smoothly flow therethrough.
