PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel compound that is a carboxylic acid having a specific chemical structure, and is useful as a curing agent, as it shows good solubility in epoxy resins and in solvents and is useful for producing polyester resin and the like, as it has a high thermal decomposition temperature. SOLUTION: This novel compound is 1,3,5-tris(3-carboxypropyl)-isocyanurate represented by formula I. This compound is prepared by allowing one mole of trisodium cyanurate of formula II to react with 3-5 moles of a halogenated butyric ester represented by the formula: XCH2CH2CH2COOR (X is Cl, Br, or I, R is a lower alkyl) in a solvent (N,N-dimethylformamide) at 50-150 deg.C to form the ester of formula III, followed by hydrolysis of this ester in the presence of a mineral acid, for example, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid or the like at 50-100 deg.C.
