PURPOSE: A method for allocating a multicast address in the internet protocol(IP) V6 is provided to divide multicast ranges into a local range and a global range, and to make a host opening a multicast session generate the multicast session in the local range, then to allocate the multicast address to the host through an address server in the global range, so as to minimize load caused when the multicast address is allocated. CONSTITUTION: If a multicast session is formed by a host in an internet protocol(IP) V6(1), the host designates a multicast range. The host decides whether the designated multicast range is a global range(2). If so, the host receives an address through a multicast address server(3). If the designated multicast range is not the global range, the host confirms whether the multicast range is a site local(4). If so, the host combines a subnet ID, an interface ID, and an 8-bit Y value, and generates a multicast address(6). If the designated multicast range is not the site local, the host combines the interface ID with an 8-bit X value only, and generates a multicast address(5). The multicast address generations are completed.
