PURPOSE: To continue the control even in the failure of a cam angle sensor by comprising a crank angle detecting means, a cam angle detecting means, an air cylinder distinguishment signal generating means, a valve timing varying means, a valve timing control means and an internal combustion engine control means separately provided from the detecting means. CONSTITUTION: An ECU 17 detects the operating condition of an internal combustion engine 1 on the basis of outputs of various sensors, and operates the valve timing optimum to the operating condition to be used as a target value. By executing the feedback control to agree the actual valve timing detected by a cam angle sensor 15 and a crank angle sensor 19 mounted on a cam shaft with the target value, the valve timing can be controlled on an artibrary position. The distinguishment of a cylinder of the internal combustion engine 1 is executed on the basis of an additional signal generated by an independently provided sensor on the basis of the output of the crank angle sensor 19. Accordingly an output signal of the cam angle sensor 15 is used only for the detection of the cam angle for valve timing control. |
