PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic encoder in which the gap and fixing angle can be adjusted easily when a magnetoreluctance element and a magnetic scale are fixed by locating a magnetized magnetic scale, at a specified pitch, in proximity to a magnetoreluctance element held by a holder. SOLUTION: A magnetoreluctance element 23 is patterned using an artificial lattice multilayer film where a ferromagnetic metal film and a nonmagnetic metal film are laid alternately and a holder 22 therefor is made of a nonmagnetic metal, e.g. a polyacetal resin. A guide part 22a provided on the holder 22 has a space part higher than the thickness of a magnetic scale 21 magnetized at a specified pitch and the magnetic scale 21 is located in proximity to the magnetoreluctance element 23 and guided slidably. Consequently, the magnetoreluctance element 23 detects a pole pattern magnetized on the magnetic scale 21 to produce a large output voltage constantly. According to the structure, highly accurate adjustment of gap required for fixing a magnetreluctance element made of a ferromagnetic metal film and a magnetic scale can be eliminated while suppressing the effect of fixing angle.
