PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting device for rare gas discharge lamp capable of stabilizing the change in the light quantity of the discharge lamp to a certain degree after the operation. SOLUTION: A lighting device for a rare gas discharge lamp DL of such a structure that a pair of band-shaped outer electrodes 5 and 6 are arranged isolatedly on the outside peripheral surface of an envelope 1, is composed of a DC/DC converter CV including a first switching element S1 and a first drive circuit CT located on the input side of an output transformer TR, a constant power forming circuit including a second switching element S2, coil current sensor circuit R1, a second drive circuit MM, a first driver circuit DR1, a first comparator circuit OP1 and integer circuit SM, and a high-frequency voltage generating circuit to generate a pulse-form high-frequency voltage on the output side of the output transformer on the basis of the switching operation of the second switching element. The power on the input side of the high-frequency voltage generating circuit in the condition that the rare gas discharge lamp connected to the output side of the high-frequency voltage generating circuit is lighted, is controlled so as to be approx. constant by the constant power forming circuit.
