PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize higher densification using a magneto-optical recording medium for MAMMOS(magnetic amplifying magneto-optical system) which is equipped with a magnetic domain expanding/reproducing layer for transferring and expanding the recording magnetic domain of a recording layer. SOLUTION: While a magneto-optical recording medium in which information is in the front edge position of the recording magnetic domain is scanned by a reproduce beam, an external magnetic field which has the same polarity as that of the recording magnetic domain is impressed. When the front edge of the recording magnetic domain enters the heat spot formed in the magnetic domain expanding/reproducing layer, the front edge is transferred to that layer, and the transferred magnetic domain expands to the reproduce beam spot by the impressing of the external magnetic field. An amplified reproducing signal is detected from the magnetic domain expanding/ reproducing layer. By knowing the timing of from a data starting position to the detecting position of the reproducing signal, the position information of the front edge is reproduced. Since the information is only in the front edge of the recording magnetic domain, its length can be extremely shortened, so that the recording density is further increased.
