A pneumatic tyre has a tread including reinforcing fabric(s) with parallel reinforcement members at 10 - 45 deg to the circumferential direction and layer(s) with textile reinforcements spirally wound in the circumferential direction. The textile reinforcements have a modulus <= 900 cN/tex which exceeds 12 cN/tex when compressed with less than 3 % deformation. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) The above tyre, when new, the contraction coefficient of the wound reinforcements when incorporated in the tread, is less than the coefficient of the freestanding reinforcements; (b) The above tyre, where the diameter of the spiral reinforcements across most of the tread is the same before and after vulcanization.
