PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect an obstacle hidden by another object. SOLUTION: The obstacle-detecting device checks to see if there is an obstacle being hidden temporarily by another object according to history information for indicating the detection history of the object (S19). When it is estimated that there is an obstacle hidden by another object, the background data of a specific region including the hidden obstacle is updated, thus storing an obstacle hidden temporarily by another object also in the background data and hence more accurately detecting the obstacle using the background data.
