PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium that exhibits a high output and a satisfactory C/N ratio even in a high-density magnetic recording. SOLUTION: A magnetic recording medium in which on a non-magnetic flexible supporting member, a non-magnetic layer containing non-magnetic powders and a binder and a magnetic layer containing ferromagnetic powders and a binder are formed in this order. An average thickness of the magnetic layer is in the range from 0.01μm to 0.3μm both inclusive, while an average thickness of the non-magnetic layer is equal to or less than 0.5μm. In a roughness spectrum of a surface of the non-magnetic flexible supporting member on which the non-magnetic layer and the magnetic layer are to be formed, measured by an Atomic Force Microscopy, intensities of roughness components with wavelengths of 1 to 5μm are equal to or less than 0.5 nm2, while intensities of roughness components with wavelengths equal to or larger than 0.5μm but less than 1μm are in the range from 0.02 to 0.5 nm2. Furthermore, a ratio MD/TD of Young's modulus of the non-magnetic flexible supporting member in the MD direction to that in the TD direction is in the range from 1/5 to 1/1 both inclusive.
