PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an misalignment diagnosis method for image reader which accurately diagnoses misalignment of an image reader in a short time to obtain the diagnosis result of high reliability. SOLUTION: A scanner unit 11 is provided with a platen glass 2 on which a document is placed, a light source unit 3 which illuminates the document, a CCD line sensor 4 which receives reflected light from the document to photoelectrically convert it, first to third mirrors 5 to 7 which lead the reflected light from the document to the CCD sensor 4, and a lens 8. A chart which has a plurality of marks for diagnosis to diagnose 'misalignment' of each component constituting the unit 11 is printed or stuck in a position off a document effective area on the platen glass 2. In the case of misalignment diagnosis, the chart is detected through the sensor 4, and the extent of misalignment is calculated on the basis of the detection result, and the calculation result is displayed to an operator through a display part.
