PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an optical fiber having a different mode field distribution with a small loss, preventing deterioration of mechanical strength. SOLUTION: In this fusion splicing method, a coating removed part of at least one optical fiber between coating removed parts on one ends to be spliced of two optical fibers having different mode field distributions mutually is heated by a burner to change the mode field distribution continuously, and the coating removed part of at least one optical fiber is cut so that the mode field distributions on splicing end faces of the two optical fibers to be spliced roughly agree with each other, and fusion splicing of the two optical fibers is executed to realize small-loss splicing, and thereafter surface treatment of the heated part is executed by etching by using hydrofluoric acid solution to prevent deterioration of mechanical strength. |
