PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make performable a processing suitable for recording/reproducing an AV data stream requiring real time property as a video recorder by providing a first operation mode suitable for recording/reproducing discontinuous information and a second operation mode suitable for recording/reproducing continuous information. SOLUTION: When power is turned on, a fixed type hard disk device HDD starts in an IT mode first of all. The IT mode is an operation mode suitable for recording or reproducing discrete information, and regards the reliability of the data as important than the real time continuity of the recording/ reproducing, and doesn't provide a time limit in error processing. The HDD is switched to an AV mode in response to that 1 is written in a bit position 0 of a word 0 of the configuration data for setting the AV mode (when this bit position 0 is 0, IT mode). Whenever the command is issued, the HDD transits between two operation modes according to whether the bit position is 0 or 1.
