PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an SR linear motor which can make thrust ripples smaller by hardly lowering its average thrust by changing the shapes of poles on the primary side, on which field coils are wound and which usually becomes a stator. SOLUTION: An SR linear motor 11, which is driven with a three-phase alternating current, has two or more sets of three-pole units having primary-side poles 13a-13f wound with field coils 14. The poles 13b, 13d, and 13f, having rectangular cross sections and the poles 13a, 13c, and 13e having tapered front ends, are arranged alternately. Accordingly, the poles 13a-13f are formed, in such a way that the distances L1 and L2 between the center lines O1 and O3 of the facing sides of the front end faces of the poles 13a, 13b, 13d, and 13e which are positioned on both sides of the central pole 13c of the continuous five poles 13a-13e and the center lines O2 and O4 of the poles 13b and 13e positioned on the downstream side in the moving direction of a moving piece become different from each other.
