PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nuclear fuel element with a hydrogen getter for absorbing a small amount of water and hydrogen in a fuel rod when the covering pipe of a fuel rod is sound and at the same time for improving safety where excessive hydrogen cannot be generated in fracture. SOLUTION: In a nuclear fuel element where a nuclear fuel pellet 3 and a getter 9 are loaded into a fuel covering pipe 2 for sealing, the getter 9 is composed by a substance for the hydrogen getter where a substance different from a getter material composition is added from the surface to a fixed depth of one portion or entire surface of the surface-layer of the getter material for absorbing hydrogen gas.
