PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader whose cost can be reduced, which can be miniaturized, and where a 1st carriage can be surely guided to a prescribed home position in an initialization operation. SOLUTION: An original table is provided with a reference position plate 254 on the one end side of a glass surface 250. On the side of the reference position plate 254 facing the 1st carriage equipped with an exposure lamp and a mirror, the reference position plate 254 is provided with an area 4 with a 1st mark 254A, and area 2 with a 2nd mark and areas 3 and 5 as white areas arranged between them and an area 1 including a shading correction area 254C. The center of the 1st mark 254 corresponds to the home position of the 1st carriage. The 1st carriage is guided to the home position based on a voltage signal outputted from a CCD line sensor when the reference position plate with such marks is illuminated.
