Ultrasonic sensor has a bar element (P) or ultrasonic transducers each of which can be activated independently. The bar has a shaped body or shoe (91) placed in contact with the transducer faces with the spaing such that the ultrasonic beam is focussed or guided in a chosen direction. Claims are also made for a machine and procedure using a bar type sensors with use of a phase law for electronic scanning of the tube with the transducers activated in linked groups and the reflected signal captured and analysed.
