PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively use the light of an EL(electroluminescence) back light without using a condensing means such as a lens sheet. SOLUTION: The device 10 is equipped with a liquid crystal panel 54 having numerous openings 52 which can control the quantity of transmitted light and with an EL back light 12 which is almost same in size as the liquid crystal display panel 54 and which irradiates the liquid crystal display panel 54 through the back face. A concave light-emitting part 15 corresponding to each opening 52 is formed in the light-emitting layer 16 of the EL back light 12. The light generated in the concave light-emitting part 14 is repeatedly reflected on the inner wall surface of the concave light-emitting part 14 to exit along the center axis of the concave light-emitting part 14. Thus, the light shows intense directionality toward the direction of the openings 52 corresponding to the respective concave light-emitting parts 14.
