PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotator driving device and method therefor for quickly starting a rotating speed control even when a rotator is stopped at any position. SOLUTION: Plural reference marks 47 are arranged on the peripheral face of a transfer belt 41 being a rotator with unequal intervals in the traveling direction. The relation between the rotating speed of a carriage motor 45 and the traveling speed of the transfer belt 41 is recorded for one cycle at each position of the peripheral face of the traveling belt 41. Also, the set position of each reference mark 47 and each position on the peripheral face of the transfer belt 41 are preliminarily stored so as to be made correspond to each other. After the carriage motor 45 is started, the two reference marks 47 are continuously detected by a sensor SE2, and the detected both reference marks are specified from a detecting time difference at that time. The rotating position of the transfer belt 41 at a point of time when the later reference mark is detected is specified by referring to the stored contents, and the rotating speed of the carriage motor 45 is controlled so that the traveling speed of the transfer belt 41 can be made constant based on the stored contents.
