PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming device capable of sharply improving the service life of a transfer roller. SOLUTION: As the state of a transfer roller 2 which is held apart from an intermediate transfer body 1, there are 2 positions when assuming the position located on a line in one direction apart from the an intermediate transfer body 1, as a normal distance position A, and the position further apart from the distance position A as a cleaning position B, the device is constituted so that the transfer roller 2 is held in contact with a cleaning blade 3 only when if is located on the cleaning position B, and then the time for the roller 2 to be shifted/held in the cleaning position 2 is limited to a necessary minimum (for instance, immediately prior to after a transfer).
