A position check device for determining the position of a breathing tube in patient's trachea, comprising a magnetic field sensor in the front end region of the tube which measures the strength of an externally generated magnetic field, is new. The measured field strength is related to the position of the tube end, which is indicated by an acoustic or optical signal.
