A vehicle is positioned in an area in front of the projection area of a cone of light from the headlamp to be adjusted. The vehicle position and the desired position for the light cone on the projection area are referenced to each other, and the actual projection of the light cone is moved so that it corresponds to the desired position. The vehicle position is first determined by sensors and desired position of the light cone is adjusted accordingly. The desired position of the light cone is displayed on the projection surface or the adjustment direction of the screws of the headlamp is indicated.
