PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent carrier in the developer from being stuck to an image carrier when developing is executed by moving a developer carrier in a reverse direction to the image carrier and applying alternating voltage to the developer carrier in a developing area where the image carrier and the developer carrier are opposed. SOLUTION: In this developing device, the developing is executed by moving the developer carrier 11 feeding the developer 2 including toner (t) and the carrier in the reverse direction to the moving direction of the image carrier 1 and applying the alternating voltage to the carrier 11 in the developing area where it is opposed to the carrier 1. Then, the condition of|Vo-Vir|/(Vpp/ Ds)<=0.09 is satisfied by relation among the initial surface potential Vo of the carrier 1, the surface potential Vir of the exposed part of the carrier 1, the peak-to-peak value Vpp of the alternating voltage and an interval Ds (mm) between the carriers 1 and 11 opposed in the developing area.
