PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform most suitable read without skipping required information neither making the output data volume excessive by executing a narrow line read mode and a tint block skip mode and selecting the read mode in accordance with a document. SOLUTION: In the case of the narrow line read mode, a control circuit 10 sets a motor control pulse of carrying rolls 3 and 4 to a low speed through a motor control circuit 11 to reduce the subscanning speed and operates OR between outputs of preceding and following lines of a line type image sensor 8 to perform thinning processing by a picture processing circuit 9. By this processing, output data is not made excessive and narrow line data is held. In the narrow line skip mode, the motor control pulse of carrying rolls 3 and 4 is set to a high speed to invalidate the thinning processing, and the thinning processing is not performed. By this mode, the tint block of an automobile inspection document.
