The precision sliding carriage system (401, 400, 402) is mounted in at least one plane above the spindle. The whole system is upside-down with respect to a conventional machine tool so that swarf falls away from the machine tool and the carriage. The arrangement facilitates fitting of a fast-acting linear drive arrangement.
