PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a storage medium library array device capable of shortening the process time for the reconstruction of data. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a control means for monitoring the presence of a degeneration operation at the time of reading/writing the data and recording the specified degeneration information into the volume of the degeneration operation executed at the time of writing the data. By the control means, the degeneration information is recorded on the medium in the case of the data wiring process at the time of the degeneration operation, and the degeneration information is not recorded on the medium in the case of the data reading process. Then, by means of referring the degeneration information for every volume, the volume such that the data are to be reconstructed, is easily selected. Thus, since only the volume subjected to degeneration operation at the time of writing the data is made to be the object volume for the data reconstruction and the volume subjected to degeneration operation at the time of reading the data is not to be the object volume for the data reconstruction, the time needed for reconstructing the data is remarkably reduced.
