The shock absorber for a car comprises a cylinder (3) which is divided by a separating piston (8) into an oil chamber (7) and a gas chamber (9). The oil chamber is subdivided into a first (6) and second (7) chamber by a second piston (5) which has a through bore (14) allowing oil to pass between the two chambers. A hydraulic connection (13) allows hydraulic fluid under pressure to be fed into the oil chamber. The novel feature is that separating piston is designed to automatically seal the hydraulic connection in the case of a leak.
