PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control to be exposure time agreeable to a subject whatever position in an image pickup plane the subject exists at. SOLUTION: The image pickup plane by a CCD is divided into m×n blocks and a focus value expressing whether each block is brought into focus is acquired (step S1), the luminance value of every block is detected and acquired (step S2), and the evaluated value of brightness per one block is calculated by multiplying a weighted coefficient contrived based on the acquired focus value of each block by the luminance value of each block (steps S3 and S4). When the calculated evaluated value is larger than a previously set target value as a result obtained by comparing the evaluated value with the target value (step S5), the exposure time by the CCD is made shorter (step S6). In the case of deciding that the evaluated value is smaller than the target value, such control is performed that the exposure time by the CCD is made longer.
