The engine has valves actuated by camshafts via levers. One end (20) of each lever (13,15) acting with a gas exchange valve (3,6) is supported on a bearing head (17) formed on the support piston (18) of a hydraulic tappet clearance compensation element (19). The support pistons of all compensation elements face upwards and are at an angle relative to the horizontal. The pistons are located below the gas exchange valves, and are ventilated via channels opening into the bearing head.
