The paint roller (10) has a paint applicator (22) and an axial surface (36) coupled to same and having a position memory indicator (38, 40) corresponding to a certain position on the circumferential face of the applicator so that at least one indicator shows which of the numerous patterned surface areas (30, 32) on the applicator surface last contacted the wall surface (14) being painted. Independent claim describes paint tray with trough and ramp and with web with stop for holding a hook by which the tray can be hung up.
