An automated opening mechanism 16 for a panel, door or window, has an operating means 30 having an end part (74, figure 6) adapted for connection to the panel 20 or to its surrounding frame 22. A housing means 24 for the operating means 30, is adapted for attachment to the frame 22 or the panel respectively. A drive means 26 carried by the housing means 24, is operable for driving the operating means 30 so that the end part (74, figure 6) can be driven alternately away from and towards the housing means 24. The operating means 30 is both flexible and resilient and can be in the form of a close-wound helical spring made from stainless steel wire. The spring 30 can also be wound on a spool 34 driven by a motor 26. |
