PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a punch press which prevents a phase shift of a tool due to a lateral load generated at punching work without extending a cycle time. SOLUTION: Cartridges 8 and 9 on a punch side and a die side which support a punch tool 6 and a die tool 7, respectively, and a punch driving means 14 which vertically drives the punch tool 6 are provided. Tool supporting bodies 8 and 9 are locked by locking means 27A and 27B of the tool supporting bodies to prevent a movement of the tools in a horizontal direction due to a lateral load acting on each tool 6 and 7 when the punch work is carried out. A decision means 30 which decides whether a lateral load in a following work exceeds an allowable limit value or not is provided. When the lateral load is decided as not exceeding the allowable limit value, the locking means 27A and 27B of the tool supporting body are controlled by a lock control means 31 so that the locking means 27A and 27B of the tool supporting body do not lock. The locking is carried out when the proceeding direction of the working and the direction of the advancing and reversing directions of the cartridges coincide with each other especially in a forwarding working (cutting work by forming continuos plural punched holes).
