PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a proper rigidity against a downward bending load to allow the relative displacement of both lateral ends of a cover body by water- tightly fixing a flat cover having substantially an even thickness to each skeleton, and repulsively supporting the middle part between both the lateral ends of the cover to the skeleton. SOLUTION: This expansion joint device 1 is provided so as to block a clearance 2 from above extending between two buildings 3, 4 adjacent with the horizontal clearance 2. The base end of a support member 17 is extended from the middle part 16 of a sheet-like cover 5 consisting of a flexible and elastically repellent material through a root part 35, bent down on the base part of an edge member 23, and fixed onto the edge member 23 in the pressed state by a seat plate 36. A tip part 37 is protruded to the vicinity just above the coping 12 of a roof structure 11 to repulsively support the middle part 16 of the cover 5 from under. The water-tightness between a decorative cover 27 and an opposed wall surface 8 is ensured by a sealant 48 placed between a bent part 42 and the opposed wall surface 8.
