PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new polyepithioethyl compound containing a specific number of epithioethyl groups bonded to sulfur atom in the molecule, having high refractive index and transparency and useful as an optical material such as plastic lens. SOLUTION: The objective polyepithioethyl compound contains two or more 1,2-epithioethyl groups bonded to one sulfur atom in the molecule, e.g. bis(1,2- epithioethyl) sulfide of the formula. The compound can be produced by reacting thioacetic acid with a halogen (e.g. chlorine), reacting the resultant thioacetic acid halogelide with vinylthio group of a polyvinylthio compound and subjecting the reaction product to hydrolytic cyclization, or the like. A composition containing the compound in an amount of preferably >=50 wt.% can be produced and the composition can be polymerized by the addition of a curing catalyst (e.g. dimethylcyclohexylamine) to obtain a cured resin, or the like.
