PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new heterocyclic dicarboxylic acid diamide derivative having excellent herbicidal activity and useful as a new herbicide. SOLUTION: The objective compound is a heterocyclic dicarboxylic acid diamide derivative of formula I or II (R1 is H or a 18C alkyl; R2 is a 1-8C alkyl, a 1-8C alkoxy or the like; X is H, a halogen, nitro or the like; Y is H, a halogen, nitro or the like; Z is O, S or the like), e.g. 3-(3chloro-2,6- diethylphenyl)aminocarbonyl-1-methyl-2indolecarboxylic acid n-propylamide. The objective heterocyclic dicarboxylic acid diamide derivative can be produced e.g. by hydrolyzing a dicarboxylic acid ester of formula III (R is a 1-6C alkyl) to obtain a corresponding dicarboxylic acid, subjecting the acid to dehydrative cyclization in the presence of a dehydration agent, reacting the obtained acid anhydride with a substituted aniline of formula IV, reacting the produced anilide with a dehydration agent to obtain a heterocyclic carboxylic acid imide and finally reacting with an amine of formula R1R2NH, etc.
