PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pattern selecting/editing device for a sewing machine capable of sewing embroidery in which it is possible to actually observe and grasp the size and orientation of an embroidery pattern and the arrangement direction of a plurality of letter patterns with respect to a pattern display region by displaying at least parts of a pattern selecting region and the pattern display region simultaneously on the same screen of a display at the time of selecting an embroidery pattern. SOLUTION: At the time of selecting letter patterns to be used for sewing, a pattern display region 51 and a letter pattern selecting region 61 capable of selecting letter patterns to be used for sewing are simultaneously displayed on the same screen of a display 10. The whole letter pattern selecting region 61 and a pattern display remaining region 62 not superimposed on the letter pattern selecting region 61 in the pattern display region 51 are displayed, and a plurality of selected letters (individual letters are horizontally oriented) in a portrait arrangement are displayed in the left-side display remaining region 62.
